Blood Tests and Pathology
Blood and pathology tests are a vital part of detecting, diagnosing, and treating conditions.
Welbeck’s paediatric imaging and diagnostics service provides specialist assessment and diagnostic support for children and young people aged 3+. Our expert radiologists and clinical imaging teams use advanced technology to provide accurate answers, guide treatment, and support clinical decisions in a calm, child-friendly environment.

At Welbeck, we recognise that children may feel anxious about tests and procedures. Our radiologists and radiographers focus on gentle communication and careful explanation to help them feel at ease at every stage. We use advanced on-site diagnostic technology to gather high-quality information quickly, so clinical teams can make informed decisions about your child’s care without delay. We also work closely with paediatric clinicians across several specialties to ensure joined-up care from first referral through results and treatment planning.

Our paediatric imaging and diagnostics team supports clinical investigation across a broad range of symptoms, including persistent pain, unexplained swelling, orthopaedic follow-up (fracture clinic), neurological symptoms, and recurrent infections.
Scans and tests can be daunting for both children and parents. Our compassionate staff take time to listen, support, and answer questions to help you feel as supported as possible. We’re also able to offer child-appropriate testing, with lower doses of radiation and reduced scan times, to help further put your mind at ease.
We’re proud to offer a walk-in service for X-rays and blood testing. There’s no booking required; simply arrive with a referral form from your GP, consultant, or specialist doctor, and we’ll see you as soon as possible. For X-rays, we’re open 8am to 8pm, Mon to Fri, and 9am to 4pm Sat. For blood tests, we’re open 8am to 8pm Mon to Fri, and 8am to 4pm Sat. Please ensure you follow any fasting or other preparation instructions from your referrer before arriving for tests. Don't hesitate to reach out to our team with any queries.
We offer a full range of paediatric imaging and diagnostic techniques, including blood tests, X-ray, CT, DEXA, and MRI*. *Age ranges vary for some tests, such as MRI, which is available to children aged 7+. Please contact the centre directly for more information.

Blood and pathology tests are a vital part of detecting, diagnosing, and treating conditions.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan uses a magnetic field and radio waves to take images of the inside of your body.

An X-ray is a type of imaging test that uses radiation to produce images of the body.

CT (computed tomography) is a specialised imaging test that uses X-ray beams to create detailed cross-sectional pictures of the body.

A DEXA scan is a simple, painless test that measures your bone density and helps assess your risk of osteoporosis – a condition that weakens bones and makes them more likely to break.

Our highly skilled radiologists and consultants perform a broad range of ultrasound scans within our modern facilities, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment for issues involving organs, tissues, and blood flow. For ultrasound scans, please contact our dedicated centre: ultrasound@onewelbeck.com | 02033277305
Our radiologists and radiographers are experienced in working with young people. Care is always tailored to the individual child, with attention to their comfort, understanding and wellbeing throughout the diagnostic process. At Welbeck, we’re committed to ensuring the referral process is smooth and efficient. We welcome referrals from GPs and other healthcare professionals and aim to offer same-day or next-day appointments where possible.

All of our tests require a referral from a GP, consultant, or specialist. To book an appointment, please contact the centre via our enquiry page, or by phone: 020 8015 5982.
We offer a walk-in service for patients with a referral form for blood tests and X-rays. Please click here to access our referral forms, and contact the centre directly for more information.
If you require a referral and would like to see a Welbeck specialist, please contact the relevant centre to book an initial consultation.
Following your appointment, copies of your imaging can be provided on request. We can send these to you directly via secure digital download, provide a CD, or share them with your referrer wherever possible (dependant on sharing platform access). Please enquire, and we can advise on specific requests.
If your child is having blood tests, you can stay with them throughout. Your child can also sit on your lap if this helps them feel more comfortable.
If your child is having an imaging test, like an X-ray or MRI, the radiographer will advise on the safety measures required. It’s not always possible for you to stay with your child for these types of tests. If you’re unsure, please contact the centre ahead of time for information.
If needle or canula insertion is required to properly perform a test, we’ll make you're made aware of this ahead of time. A numbing cream called EMLA cream can be applied before needle or cannula insertion – please arrive 1 hour early if this is required. We may also use freeze spray for those over 12 years of age.
