About Justin Garner

Dr Justin Garner is a specialist in respiratory medicine at the One Welbeck and Royal Brompton Hospital and sees patients with all manner of chest problems including shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, and wheeze. He has expertise in management of a wide range of respiratory conditions and his interests include lung health screening, lung cancer, lung nodules, COPD, asthma, respiratory infections, unexplained breathlessness, cough, optimisation before surgery, and diagnostic & interventional bronchoscopy (including robotic-assisted procedures).

His evaluations are holistic and focus on patient-centred care. He is renowned for his clear communication, empathy, and pragmatic approach in managing complex conditions. He is frequently consulted for second opinions and is an internationally regarded chest physician.

Dr Justin Garner obtained his undergraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from Imperial College, London, in 2008, and completed his specialist training in Northwest Thames. He holds a BSc in Medical Sciences (Endocrinology), a Post-graduate Certificate in Allergy, and a PhD in Interventional Bronchoscopy. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).

He has practiced as a Consultant Respiratory Physician in the Lung Cancer and Interventional Pulmonology Department at the Royal Brompton Hospital since 2021. He is Respiratory Lead for the Brompton Lung Screening Programme and Lung Nodule Service. He specialises in advanced bronchoscopy techniques including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and robotic-assisted navigation (to peripheral lung nodules) for diagnosing and staging of lung cancer, lung volume reduction for emphysema and hyperinflation including the implantation of endobronchial valves and other novel devices, and bronchial thermoplasty for asthma.

Dr Garner holds an Honorary Senior Clinical Lectureship at Imperial College, London, and is a member of both the British Thoracic Society and the European Thoracic Society.

Research

Dr Garner has undertaken extensive research in respiratory medicine, notably in the field of interventional bronchoscopy. For his efforts, he has been awarded the prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Outstanding Leadership in Research prize and an interventional pulmonology grant from the European Respiratory Society.

His research interests range from small airways disease and inflammatory biomarkers to the evaluation of novel medical devices. Current projects include peripheral pulmonary nodule ablation, bronchoscopic lung volume reduction techniques, epithelial resurfacing for chronic bronchitis, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in lung cancer screening.

To date, he has authored near to 100 editorials, original articles, and book chapters on respiratory medicine.

Teaching

Dr Garner is an experienced teacher and examiner, with a passion for teaching medical students and post-graduate healthcare professionals. He is a recipient of the prestigious UCL Top Teachers award and is Educational Lead for Internal Medical Trainees in Respiratory Medicine at the Brompton.

Awards
